Community & Politics

For Puerto Ricans the experience of migration is a constant reality. Today the Diaspora is being shaped by a young and highly mobile generation that continues to express strong affiliation with the Island and its status. Within U.S. borders, Puerto Rican political, economic and social successes are coupled with high poverty and high school drop out rates. These issues are topics for discussion in this section.

Puerto Rico's student struggle after the strike

A two-month strike by students at the University of Puerto Rico (UPR) ended in victory in June. The strike spread to shut down all 11 campuses of the public university and, in the process, shook Puerto Rico's political establishment.

Giovanni Roberto, a member of the UPR students' national negotiating committee and member of the Organización Socialista Internacional, spoke to Eric Ruder about the dynamics of the struggle--and what's ahead for those involved in the fight against the government's attack on students, workers and public education in general.

THE VICTORY of Puerto Rico's student strike was inspiring to people facing similar conditions in the U.S. and elsewhere. What specifically did you win, and can you describe the administration's latest counteroffensive after the strike ended?

Puerto Rican teachers strike over staff, funding

SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico — Teachers walked off their jobs Thursday in a one-day strike over staff and funding levels in Puerto Rican schools, giving students an unplanned day off barely three weeks into the new academic year.

The Federation of Teachers said it paralyzed 90 percent of the 1,500 public schools in the U.S. island territory. Education officials said 30,000 teachers stayed away from their posts, while about 13,000 teachers went to work.

Puerto Rico's pioneering 1989 law against domestic violence is clouded by U.S. territory's lead in intimate-partner killings found in a recent survey. Critics say government budget cutbacks are making matters worse.

SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico (WOMENSENEWS)--Despite its groundbreaking 1989 law against domestic violence, Puerto Rico suffers one of the world's worst rates of intimate-partner violence.

Advocates blame the situation on inadequate funding for women's rights policies and weak political support for implementing the law. They direct particular criticism at the Office of the Women's Advocate, formed in 2001 to establish public policies with a gender perspective.
