SIXTIES ACTIVISM IN THE U.S.
In the 1960s and 1970s, young Puerto Ricans – first generation born or raised in the U.S. – organize across the U.S. Inspired by the civil rights movement and liberation struggles around the world, young Puerto Rican protest the Vietnam War, advocate for better social and economic conditions, and mobilize for the independence of Puerto Rico. Reflecting the merger of two great historical currents: the pro-independence struggle on the Island and U.S. movements for racial and economic equality, they organize grassroots movements, massive demonstrations, takeovers, strikes and other actions that mirror the political unrest in the country and across the world.
